The latest figures from www.HomeAway.co.uk the UK’s number one holiday rentals website, indicate British holidaymakers still hold Spain as their top summer destination and a larger number than ever before chose it for their main summer holiday this year. On HomeAway.co.uk, traditional Spanish destinations topped the charts for holidays in the third quarter of 2011 and recent government figures also showed that between July and September this year visitors to Spain spent a healthy €19.7 billion, an eight per cent increase on 2010 figures.
There was a clear shift towards short-haul destinations in Q3 2011. Nine out of ten top destinations for holidays this summer were either in the UK, or within a three hour flight. Google’s latest travel whitepaper, ‘Destination analysis Q3
2011 also highlights a clear decline in long haul holiday destinations this summer. According to the report, short haul destinations, with the exception of Tenerife, have all seen double digit growth year-on-year and Spain performed particularly well.
Opting for a short-haul destination also facilitates a longer stay as holidaymakers’ budgets stretch further. According to a survey conducted by HomeAway.co.uk in November, which asked people about their holidays during Q3 2011, 46% of respondents spent two weeks on their summer break.
